Why are more couples going through a gray divorce?

On Behalf of | Nov 16, 2021 | Divorce |

Many Michigan couples take their marriage vows seriously and expect to have long-lasting matrimony. However, there is a phenomenon occurring these days that is seeing more and more couples who have been married many years opting for divorce. There are a few reasons why this has been happening.

What is a gray divorce?

A gray divorce is a divorce among couples that have been married for many years. Gray divorce involves people who are over the age of 50. Although younger married people are more likely to end their marriage, there is a growing trend of people over 50 years old who are ending up divorced after 20 years, 30 years and even longer.

Why are more older couples getting divorced?

There are various factors that might determine why divorces are occurring more and more frequently with older couples. In previous decades, it was not necessarily an option. People were urged to stay in their marriage for various reasons.

Times have changed a lot over the past 30 years. Older people are no longer inclined to stay in marriages that no longer fulfill them. Sometimes, people drift apart once they realize they don’t have much in common.

Older married couples might also consider that there is no longer a reason to stay together once their children have grown up and moved out. Or there may be an issue of emotional or physical abuse within the marriage that the abused party just doesn’t want to deal with anymore.

Finances are a huge reason behind any divorce. Gray divorce is no exception. If the couple has tried to work through their financial differences and hasn’t been able to settle them, they might not want to stay married.

These are only a few reasons why divorce is happening more often with older couples. If you and your spouse have decided your marriage is no longer worth saving, divorce might be the best thing for you.
